Community Mourns the Passing of Ahmed “Mokoena” Mgweqo After Long Health Battle
The Sasolburg community is mourning the passing of 16-year-old Ahmed “Mohammed” Mokoena, also known affectionately as “Mosotho,” who died on February 2, 2026, following an extended struggle with a rare medical condition.
Ahmed, who was a learner at Nkgopoleng Secondary School in Zamdela, had been living with a serious illness that caused significant enlargement of his kidneys and also affected the structure and functioning of his legs and feet. The condition limited his mobility and required ongoing medical attention over an extended period.
Despite the challenges he faced, Ahmed was widely remembered by family members, friends, and educators as a determined and positive young person who remained hopeful throughout his treatment journey. Those who knew him described him as someone who maintained a warm personality, often sharing jokes and laughter with those around him.
In late 2025, Ahmed underwent a major surgical procedure at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. The operation was considered successful, and he was able to recover well enough to return home during the festive season. His return brought hope and relief to his loved ones, who believed he was on a path toward improved health.
However, his condition took a sudden turn toward the end of January 2026. On Saturday, January 31, Ahmed reportedly began experiencing severe chest pain and was rushed back to the hospital for further medical care. Despite the efforts of healthcare professionals, he passed away two days later, on Monday, February 2.
His passing has left a deep sense of loss within the Zamdela and Sasolburg communities, where he had built strong relationships through school, friendships, and social interactions. On social media, messages of sympathy and remembrance have continued to pour in, with many highlighting his resilience and the strength he displayed while managing a chronic health condition at such a young age.
A funeral service for Ahmed, also known as Shon Ahmed Mgweqo, was held at Nkgopoleng Secondary School — the same institution where he spent much of his time as a learner. The school grounds, usually filled with daily academic activities and youthful energy, became a place of reflection as family members, classmates, teachers, and community members gathered to pay their final respects.
During the service, speakers shared memories that reflected Ahmed’s vibrant personality and his ability to connect with others despite facing ongoing medical challenges. Educators described him as a respectful learner who remained engaged with school life whenever his health allowed him to attend classes. Friends remembered moments of humor and kindness that left lasting impressions.
