SABC2 and Danie Odendaal Productions have confirmed that South Africa’s most popular Afrikaans soapie, 7de Laan , will terminate after season 24 in December.
The soap opera, which debuted on SABC2 on April 4, 2000, has had audiences captivated to their televisions for the past 23 years.
The soapie introduced much-loved characters such as Oubaas, Hilda, Charmaine, Aggie, Emma, and the Meintjies family, who became household names, by focusing on the lives of individuals who reside in and around the community of 7de Laan in Hillside, a suburb.
Originally shown in Afrikaans solely, 7de Laan has undergone many alterations to represent a changing society, including the incorporation of various dynamic characters, plots, and languages from other races and cultures, reflecting South Africa’s rich diversity.
“SABC is proud to have worked with Danie Odendaal Productions and been part of the journey leading and producing the best Afrikaans soapie on local television for SABC2,” said Lala Tuku, SABC’s head of programming for video entertainment.
“7de Laan has penetrated the hearts of millions of South Africans. With iconic characters over the years, that still hold a place in the viewers hearts, powerful storylines crafted by a talented writing team engaged the audience on relevant topics.
“After more than two decades on air, the award-winning 7de Laan leaves a lasting imprint on the SA television landscape. SABC wishes all the dedicated and talented cast and crew of 7de Laan all the best on their future endeavours.
“It has been an honor and privilege for over two decades to produce a show that has touched the lives of so many South Africans.”
“As we close this chapter, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated cast and crew who have poured their talent and passion into making the show a reality.”
“We also want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our viewers and fans, whose unwavering support has been the driving force behind our success.”
The soapie contributed to South Africans’ transition to a democratic state by addressing problems like as inter-racial and homosexual relationships.
It has also been used to shed light on social evils such as gender-based violence, drug addiction, kidnappings, and people trafficking over the years.
Many prizes have been bestowed upon it throughout the years, including the South African Film and Television prizes for best soapie.
It was also named the Most Popular Soapie in the Royalty Soapie Awards in 2023, and Deirdre Wolhuter earned the Outstanding Female Villain award for her depiction of Mariaan Welman.
