According to a friend who spoke to ZiMoja, the man and his two companions joined their table and offered to buy drinks, creating a seemingly carefree atmosphere. However, as the night progressed, it became apparent that the situation was fraught with danger.
Hadebe’s friend urged him to disclose his sexuality to the man, sensing that he might not be accepting of Hadebe being gay. Despite the warning, Hadebe brushed off the advice, choosing to go along with the man’s advances. The situation escalated when Hadebe’s friend was ordered to leave the car they were traveling in, as the men insisted on spending time alone with Hadebe.

The next day, Hadebe was found shot nine times at a bed and breakfast in Johannesburg, a horrific end to a night that began with promise.
