Police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the murders of musician Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his companion, renowned chef Tebello Tibz Motsoane.
At an interministerial meeting on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said the pistol used to kill Forbes had been discovered.
“We’ve identified two vehicles that were used.” Some of the automobiles used as escape [vehicles]. Some people were used as spotters. Some may have been utilized after the incident,” Mkhwanazi explained.
“We had identified at least one firearm that had been used and positively identified as having been used to shoot and kill Mr. Forbes that evening,” Mkhwanazi continued.
He said police were looking into a “few individuals” and would discuss interviewing them soon with the National Prosecuting Authority.
Reports that the gun used to kill Forbes had been found first began circulating in May.
It was alleged the weapon had been found in the possession of a man in his early 20s in Umlazi, south of Durban, and had, through ballistic testing, been linked to the Forbes killing.
However, police dismissed the accusations at the time, calling them baseless and spiteful.
They have not stated where or when the gun was discovered.
On February 10, AKA and Motsoane were assassinated outside a prominent restaurant on Florida Road in Durban. Their murder was caught on CCTV and quickly went viral on social media, provoking horror and anger.
