Ernest Msibi, known to many as Chester from the beloved South African television series Yizo Yizo, is currently facing a challenging chapter in his life and career. The 52-year-old actor, hailing from Soweto, recently opened up to the Daily Sun about the difficulties he has encountered in securing acting roles, and the financial strain that has followed.
In a candid interview, Msibi expressed his bewilderment at the lack of opportunities in an industry he once thrived in. “I don’t know what is happening. I go to the auditions, but I don’t get callbacks. I don’t know why I’m being sidelined like this,” he lamented. Despite still receiving warm greetings from fans who celebrate his past work, the actor feels increasingly alienated in an industry that once embraced him. “Maybe people want to talk good things about me when I’m dead, but they’re failing to help me now that I’m still alive,” he added, highlighting the disconnect he feels between his contributions to the industry and the current reality he faces.
The struggle to find work has prompted Ernest to explore other avenues, including a venture into politics. Reports suggest that he is involved in the structures of the uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party in Mpumalanga. However, Msibi insists that while he is helping in this domain, his heart remains with acting. He is adamant that he has not abandoned the craft that has defined his career. “I can never dump the acting industry for anything, including politics,” he asserted.

In an attempt to stay engaged with his passion, Ernest has also initiated his own acting projects, seeking funding to bring his ideas to life. He is actively involved in community outreach, utilizing comedy to inspire and motivate schoolchildren. “I hope that I will get the funding. That won’t only help me, but others whose doors have been closed on them. The situation is sad and painful,” he remarked, emphasizing his commitment to giving back to the community.
Msibi’s journey has seen him take on various roles throughout his career, including memorable characters in Zone 14, Uzalo, and Gomora. However, after enduring suspensions and the pressures of a competitive landscape, he has largely vanished from the small screen in recent times. Despite these challenges, he remains hopeful about the future, declaring, “I’m not going to give up. Acting is my talent, and I won’t give up on it. I believe that doors are still going to open.”
Ernest Msibi’s story is a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry. While he may currently find himself on the sidelines, his determination and resilience shine through. His experience highlights the importance of support within the industry—not only during times of success but especially during periods of hardship. As fans, colleagues, and industry leaders, it is crucial to rally around talented individuals like Ernest, ensuring that they do not feel forgotten and that their contributions are valued.
