The recent homecoming of Mahlatse Moropo, the talented actor who portrays Letetswe, son of Charles Kunutu, on SABC 1’s popular soap opera Skeem Saam, has become a shining moment for the Limpopo province. Following his outstanding achievement of winning the Viewer’s Choice Best Actor award at the 7th Annual Royalty Soapie Awards, Moropo was celebrated at a delightful breakfast event held at the Matora office complex in Seshego, Polokwane. This event was not only a recognition of his achievements but also a heartfelt welcome back to his roots.
Organized by the Mahuma Group in collaboration with the Limpopo department of sport, arts, and culture, the breakfast served as a platform for Moropo to express his gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey. “The award has come home,” he expressed, highlighting the pride he feels for being recognized by his community. His words were warmly received, resonating with a sentiment of unity and collective celebration.
Moropo took a moment to acknowledge key figures who played pivotal roles in his career, notably Mr. Matome Rapetsoa, who has served as both a mentor and a supporter. In his remarks to TshisaLIVE, Moropo stated, “I would like to thank Mr. Matome Rapetsoa for the support and for planning my homecoming. He is doing the best as a mentor.” His statement reflects not only his personal gratitude but also the importance of mentorship in nurturing talent in the arts.
Darren van Rensburg of the Mahuma Group also highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it was a collaborative effort from various factions dedicated to uplifting local talent. Moropo’s journey in the dramatic arts began at a tender age of ten when he joined the Paul Rapetsoa’s Institution of Dramatic Arts (PRIDA). Under the guidance of the late Mahuma Paul Rapetsoa, Moropo honed his skills, paving the way for the success he enjoys today.
The event highlighted the collective efforts in the arts community in Limpopo, showcasing how support networks can uplift talented individuals. As Moropo continues to gain recognition, stakeholders like the Mahuma Group, Get Down Productions, and the Matome Rapetsoa Foundation have pledged to stand by him. Van Rensburg captured the essence of this commitment with a forward-looking statement: “He is one of a kind and the Royalty Soapie Award is just the beginning — we’re heading for the Oscar now.”
This celebration was more than just a tribute to Mahlatse Moropo’s achievements; it was a reaffirmation that the arts community in Limpopo is vibrant and ready to support its champions. As Moropo continues his journey, the hope is that more talents will emerge from the province, supported by a community that celebrates and nurtures its own. For Moropo and the people of Limpopo, this moment is just the beginning of many more successes to come.
