In the television show “Smoke & Mirrors,” Melusi Yeni embodies the character of a committed detective who turns to alcohol for comfort. His performance resonates deeply with many men in Mzansi who silently battle their issues by drowning them in alcohol.
Moreover, Melusi Yeni, a seasoned actor with over twenty years of experience in the field, is thrilled to take on a character that deviates from his usual business-focused roles. This demanding part in his range of performances brings immense satisfaction to the 46-year-old artist from KwaMashu, situated close to Durban.
“I’ve been in the acting industry for a long time. Looking back at my previous roles, I realise most were business-related. Now, I’m a detective dealing with personal issues in secret. Although he works hard, his heavy drinking could jeopardize his job. Acting drunk is not easy. It’s very challenging, which is why I enjoy it,” Melusi explained.
The skilled actor relocated from KwaMashu to Joburg in 2006 to follow an acting career path. By 2008, he secured his initial starring part as Mabutho Sokhulu, a lawyer partnering with his sibling in a practice. Since then, he has featured in more than 10 TV series such as: Generations, Imbewu: The Seed, Tshisa, Isifiso, Sibongile & The Dlaminis, Home Affairs, and The Wild.
Melusi mentioned that many men have approached him about his current character.”Initially, I didn’t realize how much my character and storyline would impact men. Many suffer in silence. Watching detective Phakathi gives them comfort and a lesson. It’s gratifying to know that the character I portray touches lives,” Melusi shared.
