The actors of the popular SABC2 drama series Muvhango allegedly staged a walkout from a production meeting in April due to a salary dispute with the show’s producers. This incident highlights the ongoing financial challenges faced by the cast and crew of the iconic Tshivenda drama series. The situation has reportedly become a never-ending financial roller-coaster behind the scenes, as the actors and the production team continue to navigate the complexities of maintaining a successful and long-running television show.
Muvhango, a long-running South African soap opera that has been on television for 27 years, appears to be facing a slow decline. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been keeping the show’s producers guessing about the renewal of their contract, leaving them in a state of uncertainty, according to ZiMoja
The contracts for the show were supposed to be signed in March, which is the end of the financial year, but no agreements have been reached yet. The show’s creator, Duma Ndlovu, and his team have been engaged in negotiations with the producers and actors to make an impressive return in the new season.
As part of this effort, they reached out to singer and former Muvhango actress, Maduvha Madima, who played the role of Vele Rambulana. However, Maduvha, who turned 42 last month, reportedly declined the offer, feeling disrespected by the contract terms and believing that she deserves better compensation for her skills and experience.
The SABC is allegedly delaying the contract renewal for Muvhango because they want the show to deliver more compelling storylines. An SABC insider suggests that the broadcaster has been patient with Duma Ndlovu, who has been diverting his energy to another production, Modjadji – The Rain Queen, which is set to air on Mzansi Magic. The insider urges Ndlovu to meet with the SABC and save the jobs of the Muvhango cast and crew, as some actors have already joined other production companies or taken on hosting roles in other shows.
Duma Ndlovu has refused to comment on the situation, dismissing the inquiries as attempts to “destroy” him. The SABC spokesperson, Monnie Seopela, has stated that she is trying to gather more information on the matter from the relevant authorities.
The uncertain future of Muvhango has left its cast and crew in a precarious position, as the show’s slow decline and the SABC’s apparent hesitation to renew the contract have raised concerns about the continued employment of those involved in the long-running soapie.
