Despite having some ties to Zimbabwe, Nadia Nakai refuses to be labeled as a Zimbabwean rapper.
Nadia Nakai spoke more openly about this during her interview on Zingah’s podcast Choppin It With Bhudha T.
After her nomination claimed that she is from Zimbabwe, the rapper explained why she wants to be recognized as a South African rapper rather than a Zimbabwean rapper.
2022 Nadia and Blxckie were nominated for Best International Flow at the BET Hip Hop Awards 2022.
She explained that, despite her ties to Zimbabwe, she did not want the country’s first nomination to go via her. In contrast, many Zimbabwean rappers are ambassadors for the game.
“They had to because there’s no way I could go and represent Zimbabwe for BET when there are amazing female artists that are based in Zimbabwe, that know the culture, that rap in Shona, that live that life.”
When Zingah asked Nadia who she thought of when she thought of the women making big advances in Zimbabwe, she mentioned KikkyBadA*s.
“I believe KikkyBadAs* is deserving of a BET nomination.” She’s bringing the whole package, the amazing tunes, she’s rapping in Shona, she’s a part of the culture.”
Nadia went on to say that it would be unfair to take credit for and represent a country when she does not truly represent it.
