SASSA Disability Grant 2025: Online Applications Now Open
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has launched an online application platform for the Disability Grant, making it easier for individuals with disabilities to access financial support. This initiative aims to save applicants time and transport costs while improving accessibility, especially for those with mobility challenges or living far from SASSA offices.
How to Apply for the SASSA Disability Grant
Applicants can now use the official SASSA website (www.sassa.gov.za) to book medical assessments and complete most of the application process online. Follow these steps:
- Visit www.sassa.gov.za and follow the step-by-step application process.
- Upload certified documents, including a medical assessment report (no older than six months) and a valid 13-digit bar-coded ID.
- If you lack internet access, visit a local SASSA office for in-person assistance or to book an assessment.
SASSA emphasizes that the online platform is an additional option, not a replacement for in-person applications at SASSA offices.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the SASSA Disability Grant, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee residing in South Africa.
- Be aged 18 to 59 years.
- Provide a medical assessment confirming a temporary (6–12 months) or permanent disability that prevents work.
- Submit a referral form from a registered healthcare facility.
- Pass a means test, which includes spousal income if married (e.g., single applicants’ annual income must not exceed R101,640; married couples’ combined income must not exceed R203,280).
- Not receive another social grant for themselves.
- Not be cared for in a state institution.
- Provide a 13-digit bar-coded ID (or SASSA-approved alternatives, such as an affidavit with proof of ID application from the Department of Home Affairs).
For individuals under 18 requiring permanent care due to a disability, a primary caregiver may apply for a Care Dependency Grant instead.
Grant Amount and Payment
As of April 2025, the Disability Grant provides R2,180 per month, increasing to R2,190 from October 2025. Payments can be received via:
- Direct bank deposit (bank charges may apply).
- SASSA card for withdrawals at partnered retailers (e.g., Pick n Pay, Shoprite).
- Specific institutions (e.g., disability centers).
