This month, an actor was recast in the iconic role made famous by Cornet Mamabolo.
Hungani Ndlovu claims that while his Skeem Saam character Thabo “Tbose” Maputla is adamantly opposed to open marriage, he would never dare to ask his acting wife Stephanie for such a thing in real life.
The narrative in which Tbose requests an open marriage from his wife Mapitsi (Mogau Motlhatswi) has television watchers on the edge of their seats.
But asked if the concept of a non-monogamy union appealed to him in real-life, Ndlovu said: “Hell no… I don’t aspire to such because the concept of marriage is more sacred between two people,” he said.
“To grow and build something with someone you call your life partner is what I aspire to. We have a covenant and it’s something I want to preserve as much as possible,” Ndlovu added.
“If I were to bring up the idea of an open marriage to Steph, she’d laugh at my face and probably say: ‘Tell me when you’re done joking’. We’ve spoken at length about what we want to achieve in our marriage.”
This month, Ndlovu was recast in the popular character made famous by Cornet Mamabolo, which elicited mixed reactions from fans of the SABC 1 daily drama.
“Being cast as Tbose has been a rollercoaster ride… a great one, I might add.” The process of securing the role and being on set was nerve-racking enough, and the recast was even more difficult to deal with mentally, but as I overcome that emotion, my abilities as an actor improved. I was able to perform the tasks required for this role.
Viewers have voiced worry about a Tsonga actor playing a character who speaks Pedi fluently.
“I understand that most people find it difficult to accept a recast of a role they’ve grown to love, and Cornet has done so well with Tbose over the last decade… “Now that people are watching and commenting on my role, whether good or bad, I’m just glad they’re engaging,” he remarked.
