Sonia Mbele is suffering from an incurable disease, autoimmune disease. She was hospitalized for two weeks a few months ago due to an unknown illness, according to ZiMoja. She recently failed to appear in court after being accused, along with two former business colleagues, of failing to file their company’s tax filings with SARS on time.
Her attorney informed the court both times that his client was ill and even provided medical records. Sonia Mbele, the actress turned producer and businesswoman, has confessed to ZiMoja that she has an autoimmune condition.
This was made clear by the 44-year-old actress in an interview with ZiMoja over the weekend. Mbele revealed her battle with the condition. The mother of three claims she was diagnosed with the condition a few months ago, soon before the premiere of season 3 of Real Housewives of Johannesburg.
“At the time I thought I was just fatigued until my doctors performed additional tests which confirmed that I have anemia that has gone chronic,” she said.
She said she kept the condition a secret from everyone except her family. The actress told ZiMoja that she is currently taking treatment for iron deficiency. She said that the disease has affected her life in many ways, both physically and emotionally.
“I had to change my diet and eating habits, quit alcohol and I now have to go for drips to make sure I have enough iron,” she added.
Mbele stated that she has learned to live with the sickness and is doing everything she can to control it. She now has weekly infusions and an oxygen tank because medicine no longer works for her.
“Sometimes, additional tests or treatments for iron deficiency are required, especially if your doctor suspects internal bleeding.” “Iron supplementation can usually correct iron deficiency anemia,” explains Mbele. According to the Blood and Water actress, it’s been a difficult year for her, but she is thankful to those who have supported her, particularly her family.
NOTE: An autoimmune disease is a condition in which your immune system mistakenly damages healthy blood cells in your body causing your body to produce inadequate healthy red blood cells.
