MEYERTON — A devastating shooting incident along a major public transport route in Meyerton has left six people dead and at least 18 others injured, sending shockwaves through the local community and renewing concerns about commuter safety in South Africa.
The attack occurred during a taxi journey travelling from Johannesburg to Lesotho. According to police, the incident unfolded suddenly and without warning, turning an ordinary trip into a scene of chaos and tragedy.
Police spokesperson Major General Fred Kekana confirmed that the suspects allegedly opened fire on the minibus taxi while travelling in a stolen white vehicle. The shooting is believed to have been unprovoked, with passengers in the taxi caught completely off guard.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after reports of gunfire were received. Upon arrival, paramedics and law enforcement officials found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Six people were declared dead at the scene, while 18 others were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, as families are still being notified.
The injured passengers are receiving medical care, and some remain in serious condition. Health officials have not provided further details but confirmed that trauma teams were mobilized to assist victims following the incident.
According to preliminary police investigations, the suspects abandoned their vehicle shortly after the shooting. It is alleged that the three suspects then hijacked a woman’s car in an attempt to flee the area. The hijacking reportedly took place nearby, adding to the fear and confusion experienced by residents.
Police launched an immediate manhunt, deploying multiple units to track down the suspects. Through coordinated efforts, law enforcement officers were able to locate and arrest all three individuals. The stolen vehicles were also recovered during the operation.
Major General Kekana praised the swift response by police officers, stating that their actions played a critical role in preventing further harm to the public. He emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that authorities are working to establish the full motive behind the attack.
“At this stage, the shooting appears to have been a random act of violence,” Kekana said. “However, detectives are following all possible leads to determine whether the incident is linked to any previous criminal activity.”
The suspects are expected to face multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, possession of illegal firearms, and hijacking. They are scheduled to appear in court once formal charges are finalized.

The incident has sparked outrage and deep concern among community members and taxi operators. Many residents expressed fear about the safety of using public transport, particularly on long-distance routes that connect provinces and neighboring countries.
Taxi associations have called for increased police visibility and stronger security measures to protect commuters. Some operators are urging authorities to introduce patrols along high-risk routes and improve intelligence-led policing to prevent similar attacks.
Local leaders have also appealed for calm while investigations continue. Community forums and religious groups have begun organizing support for affected families, offering counseling and assistance to those impacted by the tragedy.
“This is a painful reminder of the violence that continues to affect ordinary people going about their daily lives,” said one community representative. “Our thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones and those who are recovering in hospital.”
Authorities have urged anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and assist police with their investigation. They also encouraged communities to work closely with law enforcement to report suspicious activity and help combat violent crime.
As the country grapples with ongoing concerns around crime and public safety, this incident underscores the urgent need for continued efforts to protect commuters and restore confidence in public transport systems.
