People were surprised to learn that Thuso Mbedu had completely dropped her local accent and now sounds completely American.
When South African-born actress Thuso Mbedu initially became famous in the United States, her local admirers asked her not to change her accent.
This irritated the Woman Is King star, who even scolded one man for requesting her to “reduce” her new American accent. She seemed to have ignored the critics and now speaks with a heavy American accent. South Africans took note after a fan page published a video of the singer speaking.
Many of them now believe she is a “gone girl” who is no longer truly South African.
In September last year, award-winning actress Thuso Mbedu shared a scathing clapback with a Twitter users who asked her not to lose her South African accent.
“Reduce the American accent beautiful. Was watchin ur interview. Don’t lose the South ah accent,” the tweep told her. To this she responded: “Don’t talk about things you know nothing about.”
She appears to have opted to disregard any dialect talk and now speaks with a full-fledged American accent.
Her admirers became aware of this almost immediately as a fan page published a TikTok video of her speaking.
Many people went to the comments section after hearing that Thuso was no longer sounding South African, remarking that she is now a “gone girl.”
“Attention bathong! “She’s a gone girl,” one fan commented of the actress, while another said, “I love how you accept and adapt to change.” Not your average black person. Hey, I like your accent.”
