The late musician Zahara, born Bulelwa Mkutukana, has had her sisters, Lumka Mkutukana and Bandezwa Mkutukana-Febana, reportedly selling off not just her furniture, but also her multitude of awards, according to ZiMoja
Zahara tragically passed away on December 11, 2023, in a Johannesburg hospital after nearly three weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU). Her final resting place was in East London on December 23.
Reportedly, various items from Zahara’s home, including her bedroom suite, lounge suite, kitchen supplies, flat-screen TV, and double-door fridge, have been put up for sale. Additionally, the awards, bearing Zahara’s name, are also on the market, yet have not found buyers as of yet.
The acclaimed hitmaker garnered immense success in her 11-year career, amassing over 40 awards. The decision to sell Zahara’s possessions came after her townhouse in Roodepoort was auctioned off last year. Regrettably, she passed before being able to repurchase the property.
“No one has shown interest in buying the awards so far,” said the source.
Earlier this year, Zahara’s family announced plans for a benefit concert to gather funds for the home’s repurchase, but it was indefinitely postponed due to venue and funding difficulties. Despite Bandezwa having arranged for the Orient Theatre in East London, payment had not been made.
“It’s not going to happen now. We can’t get to the community hall and there have been so many challenges. Zahara fought for her house while she was still alive, throughout her career that’s what she managed to hold on to. Also, to us, that was like home, that’s why we wanted to keep it because it’s got so many memories for us with her in it. It’s part of her legacy, we do not really want to lose it,” she said.
The event, originally slated to be hosted by Lusanda Mbane, a former Scandal! actress, and to feature various artists, including Zahara’s dear friend Vusi Nova, was to help raise funds for this cause.
